Frequently asked questions
Which visas are available to live in Portugal?
The main routes are the Golden Visa (ARI, residency by investment), the D7 for people with their own stable income, the D8 for remote workers and digital nomads, and family reunification. Citizenship can follow after a qualifying period of residence.
Do I need a lawyer to apply for residence?
It is not mandatory, but a lawyer reduces the risk of refusal, prepares the file correctly and deals with AIMA on your behalf.
How long does an AIMA process take?
Timelines vary with the type of application and AIMA's current backlog. We give you a realistic estimate for your case.
When can I apply for Portuguese citizenship?
Since 19 May 2026 (Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026), naturalisation generally requires seven years of legal residence for EU and CPLP nationals and ten years for others, counted from the residence permit. Earlier applications follow the previous rules; we confirm your case.
Is the Golden Visa still available?
Yes. The programme continues, although the real-estate purchase route has been discontinued; eligible options are now investment funds, capital transfer, job creation and similar routes.
