Due to delays in the processing of immigration related applications by AIMA (The Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum), the Portuguese government announced a new extension of the validity of visas and immigration documents until June 30, 2025, through the publication of Decree-Law no. 41-A/2024 of June 28.
Thus, documents that expired after February 22, 2020 must be accepted as valid until June 30, 2025 in Portugal. After this date, as long as the holder proves that they have scheduled the renewal, the documents and visas will also continue to be accepted.
Which documents are covered by the extension?
The extension covers a wide range of immigration documents, including:
Residence Permits;
Short-stay, temporary stay and residence visas;
European Union Citizen Registration Certificates;
EU Citizen and Family Residence Cards.
Portuguese public authorities, such as the Tax Authorities (AT), the National Health Service (SNS), the Social Security Institute, as well as banks and employers, are required to accept these documents as valid until June 30, 2025.
However, it is crucial to note that this extension is only valid within the Portuguese territory.
